Report : Gunners accept bid from Barcelona for Vermaelen

By Daniel Chokoe

Arsenal have reportedly agreed a fee of around £15m with FC Barcelona for the sale of captain
Thomas Vermaelen.

The 28-year-old had also been linked with Manchester United, but Arsene Wenger confirmed he does not want to sell Vermaelen to a direct rival.

Vermaelen is now set to join Barcelona but still has to agree personal terms and pass his medical in the coming days, BBC reports.

The Belgium international is Barcelona’s second centre-back signing after they already bought
Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia for £16m.

The move to Barcelona is likely to be completed this weekend, ending Vermaelen’s five-year stay
in London.

Another masterpiece from Wenger, he managed to sell a bench warmer for £15 million and in the process ensured that he doesn’t join a direct rival team.

Hansa Pilsener becomes Arsenal’s official partner

By Daniel Chokoe

Premier League soccer club Arsenal have agreed a sponsorship deal with Hansa Pilsener beer.

The South African Breweries brand will become the English side’s official beer partner within
South Africa. It will have sole rights to use official Arsenal marks in the country on promotional
materials, and will give its consumers the chance to win signed Arsenal merchandise and trips to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal players will also appear in Hansa Pilsener campaigns. The financial terms of the deal were
not released.

“We are delighted to welcome Hansa Pilsener to the club as an official partner,” said Arsenal sales
and marketing director Vinai Venkatesham. “We are always looking to engage with our supporters and fans of the game globally, and through this
partnership we will be able to offer exclusive access to the club while giving Hansa Pilsener
the opportunity to reach our millions of supporters in South Africa through creative digital
media campaigns.”

Khensani Nobanda, the general manager of Hansa Pilsner, added: “Hansa is a beer brewed for
dreamers; it’s a brand that represents pulling out all the stops until you reach your goal. There is no doubt that Arsenal’s 2014 FA Cup victory touched and inspired many a fan in South Africa who will be following closely as the team prepares to repeat this success.”

As winners of the FA Cup in 2013/14, Arsenal play Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Sunday in the Community
Shield – the traditional curtain-raiser for the English soccer season.

Arsenal are really growing their brand and want to reach global support from fans. Who knows maybe they might have their pre-season games in South Africa soon.

Amsterdam also thought to be interested in his services.

However, FC Twente tabled a concrete offer for the South Africa international earlier this week
and the player completed his move.

Official : Bayern Munich signs Pepe Reina

By Daniel Chokoe

Bayern Munich have completed the signing of goalkeeper Pepe Reina on a three-year deal from
Liverpool .The 31-year-old passed a medical with the Bundesliga champions on Thursday and has now finalised his switch to the Allianz Arena.

Reina will likely become the back-up to Germany international Manuel Neuer as Pep Guardiola’s
men aim to retain the German top-flight crown and regain the Champions League following
defeat to Real Madrid in the semi-finals last season.

The transfer ends Reina’s nine-year association with Liverpool, with whom he won the FA Cup,
League Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Reina made 394 appearances for the Merseyside club, but was loaned out to Napoli last season
after Liverpool signed Belgium international Simon Mignolet from Sunderland.

That move saw Reina reunited with the coach who signed him for Liverpool in Rafael Benitez
and the pair again enjoyed success together as Napoli won the Coppa Italia and finished third in Serie A.

He will now link up with another old colleague in Guardiola, who he played with during his spell at

Reina becomes Bayern’s fourth acquisition of the close-season, following Robert Lewandowski, Sebastian Rode and Juan Bernat to the club.

The move might turn out to be a bad choice by Reina, as Neuer will unlikely give away the number 1 shirt to almost anyone on the planet. He is a great shot stopper who hates conceding goals and is very athletic. Reina chose to become a second best keeper just as he is reaching his peak years.

Report : Barcelona bid for Vermaelan

By Daniel Chokoe

Sky sources understand Barcelona have moved ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign
Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Vermaelen’s future at Arsenal has been the subject of speculation all summer, with the Belgium centre-
back entering the final year of his contract at the Emirates.

Manchester United and Barca are both known to have expressed an interest in Vermaelen, but now
the Catalan club have firmed up their interest with a £10million bid for the 28-year-old.

Barca are looking to bolster their somewhat weak defensive options
after Carles Puyol retired earlier this summer and they are hopeful of beating United to Vermaelen’s

Vermaelen is no longer first choice at Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger preferring the centre-back pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny last season.

Wenger also revealed last week he could not to be certain Vermaelen would stay, as he could not
guarantee the defender first-team football.

Vermaelen started just seven Premier League games last term and it seems the player is keen to move on. He has also not featured in any of the pre-season games which make his move away from Arsenal more of a reality than just a rumour.

Vermaelen is rumoured to prefer Man utd over Barcelona, so that he can link up with his best pal and former teammate Robin Van Persie.
