#MondayMadness : You stopped the penalty…..or so you think

By Daniel Chokoe

On today’s column on Monday madness, we throwback a bit to 2010 were a Moroccan goalkeeper became an internet sensation after making a bizarre mistake.

How it happened:

Khalid Askri thought he had saved a crucial spotkick in a Moroccan Cup game playing for FAR Rabat against Moghreb Fes.

The confident keeper pointed to his left as the Moghreb player stepped up to take the penalty.

And when he dutifully hit a low shot to Askri’s left, the keeper made a diving save, pushing the ball away from his line.

He then celebrated thinking the spot kick was saved however the ball stiil had some momentum to sink into a lonely empty, a classical “from hero to zero” moment.

Ronaldo wants Neymar to surpass his achievements

21983

Brazil legend Ronaldo believes Barcelona star Neymar is destined for greatness and can achieve even more success than him. The 23-year-old netted once in Barca’s 6-0 La Liga win over Getafe on Tuesday to equal Ronaldo’s figure of 47 goals for the Catalans and the two-time World Cup winner thinks his compatriot will only get better in the years to come.

“I sincerely hope that Neymar will surpass me in all aspects,” Ronaldo told ESPN Brasil.

“Neymar has a brilliant future ahead of him and is already performing marvellous at present.

“His performances will please the people of Brazil because he is a great idol.”

Neymar has scored 29 times in La Liga, 10 goals in the Champions League, seven in the Copa del Rey and once in the Supercopa de Espana.

Personally I believe, Neymar will somehow always be in the shadow of Messi he can never really be the main man for Barcelona. In terms of Achievements, he will definitely surpass Ronaldo who is the 5th alltime goal scorer for Brazil, Neymar is behind him by a mere 19 goals however I do not foresee him winning the world cup with Brazil.

#TBT : France vs South Africa 1998 WC

Little was known of France’s star players such as Thierry Henry and Zinedine Zidane, especially from African viewers such as myself. Being a young boy I anticipated the first world cup game South Africa participated in with huge excitement hoping that South Africa will show the world what we are made of, however Zinedine Zidane and co. had other ideas as they went on a complete rampage against Bafana Bafana.

The game ended with 3-0 to the host with Pierre Issa being the scapegoat for the own goal and terrible defending. The French went on to become World Champions, while South AFrica drew the rest of the group games managing to score three goals in total.

Bobby and uncommited Khune reportedly not on good terms

By Daniel Chokoe

Bobby Motaung and Itumeleng Khune's relationship has hit a low

Bobby Motaung and Itumeleng Khune’s relationship has reportedly hit a low

Itumeleng Khune seems to be ready to close Kaizer Chiefs as a chapter from his book, Bobby Motaung is very sour about the whole ordeal. The thought of losing Khune clearly brings a bitter taste to his taste buds as he has already started excluding him in team affiars.

According to Sunday World, Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung ordered security to block Khune from running onto the pitch to celebrate with the team after the final whistle.

“They blocked him before he could come out of the tunnel. They told him Bobby said he must not go anywhere near the pitch,” a Sunday World source said.

It is alleged that Motaung feels the 27-year-old goal-minder, who is yet to extend his Chiefs contract, is no longer committed to the club.

Chiefs and Khune’s representative Dan Lichman have yet to reach an agreement regarding the goalkeeper’s immediate future.

Bobby Motaung did however give clarity on the matter, stating that there is absolutely no beef between himself and Khune.

There was no celebration by players on the pitch as fans took over, in the dressing room players congratulated each other and the coach (Stuart Baxter) froze the celebration as the team has three more games to finish.

Khune is serving a red card suspension surely we all know he can’t enter the field as Premier Soccer League DC just found our coach guilty of invading the pitch while on suspension.

Shame on you Sunday World for making headlines with a complete fabrication.

Report : Barcelona bid for Vermaelan

By Daniel Chokoe

Sky sources understand Barcelona have moved ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign
Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Vermaelen’s future at Arsenal has been the subject of speculation all summer, with the Belgium centre-
back entering the final year of his contract at the Emirates.

Manchester United and Barca are both known to have expressed an interest in Vermaelen, but now
the Catalan club have firmed up their interest with a £10million bid for the 28-year-old.

Barca are looking to bolster their somewhat weak defensive options
after Carles Puyol retired earlier this summer and they are hopeful of beating United to Vermaelen’s
signature.

Vermaelen is no longer first choice at Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger preferring the centre-back pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny last season.

Wenger also revealed last week he could not to be certain Vermaelen would stay, as he could not
guarantee the defender first-team football.

Vermaelen started just seven Premier League games last term and it seems the player is keen to move on. He has also not featured in any of the pre-season games which make his move away from Arsenal more of a reality than just a rumour.

Vermaelen is rumoured to prefer Man utd over Barcelona, so that he can link up with his best pal and former teammate Robin Van Persie.

Arsenal Confirm Sanchez Move

Arsenal's new signing after passing a medical

Arsenal’s new signing after passing a medical

By Daniel Chokoe

Chile forward Alexis Sánchez has joined Arsenal FC on a four year contract from Spanish Liga giants FC Barcelona for a fee reported to be in the region of £35m.

The exact details of the deal have not been disclosed by the Gunners, who have only confirmed that the 25-year-old has signed a “long term contract”.

“I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium,” said Sánchez. “I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and playing for Arsenal in the Premier League and Champions League. I will give my best for Arsenal and want to make all the supporters happy.”

Sánchez scored 39 goals in 88 Liga outings during his three-year stint at Barcelona, whom he joined after a dream season in Serie A with Udinese Calcio. The 2010/11 Serie A player of the year – dubbed ‘El Niño Maravilla'(the Boy Wonder) brings top-level experience and flair to Arsène Wenger’s side.

Wenger said: “Alexis is a fantastic footballer and we are delighted he is joining us. Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad. He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now.”

Barcelona used his funds to sanction a move for the controversial Luis Suarez. Sanchez will wear shirt number 17, as Nacho is relegated to number 18. This is a move that excites anyone at the Emirates.

Barcelona reportedly gives Arsenal the green light on Sanchez

Arsenal agree terms with Barcelona for the in-form forward

Arsenal have been given the green light to complete their move for Alexis Sanchez after Barcelona reportedly accepted a £32 million
bid for the Chilean.

The Gunners have been trying to push through a deal for the 25-year-old for the past two months, but have now seemingly settled on a payment plan for the in-demand striker.

According to Goal.com, Arsenal will hold further talks with Sanchez’s people in the next 48 hours ahead of wrapping up a deal.

However, any formal announcement is likely to be
delayed until Barca can complete their own move for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

The Reds hoped to include Sanchez in any deal for Suarez, but the player is favouring a move to the Emirates, with his agent recently following the club
and some of their stars on Twitter.

Born in 1926, Di Stefano was a key member of the Real Madrid side that dominated Spanish and European football during the 1950s and early 1960s.

He spent the final two days of his life in the intensive care unit of the Gregorio Maranon hospital where he was kept in an induced coma.

Newcastle right-back Mathieu Debuchy has told reporters in France tonight that he will be leaving the Magpies for Arsenal this transfer window.

There are also unconfirmed reports that the Magpies have accepted a £7.9 million bid from the Gunners.

The France international is expected to undergo a medical in North London next week.

Arsene Wenger has managed to replace Sagna with a man that kept him on the bench for the duration of France’s entire world cup, great business by the Gunners manager.

Spain Bow Out Of The World Cup

The end of the road for La Roja

The end of the road for La Roja

By Daniel Chokoe

The current world champions have been eliminated from the world cup after only two games. The Spainiards suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Holland in their first game and had to bring their A-game against Chile to scrap themselves into the last 16.

That was not the case as Chile came out gun blazing and took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break, Spain came back with more desperation than anything as the inevitable happened. The game ended in defeat with the tiki-taka Champions bowing down without honor.

Iker Casillas’ goal keeping is the main factor that costs them the games, particularly the game against Chile as his horrendous handling was exposed by the South Americans.

Spain was the first world class casualty at Brazil 2014, who will be next? Uruguay, England or Portugal? I guess only time will tell.

Ronaldo goal celebration

Ronaldo goal celebration

By Daniel Chokoe

The UEFA Champions League final was a breath-taking roller coaster ride, it is certainly a game that will be remembered in many decades to come. It featured rival teams that are just separated by a street, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid battled it out in Lisbon, Portugal for the best club competition in the world.

Real Madrid were favourites to win the game, however a blunder from captain Iker Casillas meant that they went to half time trailing by a goal.

Real Madrid looked teethless upfront, which is hard to believe for a team that consist of two of the most expensive players in the world. Bale missed chances, Ronaldo barely had the ball. It took a powerful header from Sergio Ramos to put the match into extra time.

Gareth Bale made it 2-1 after heading a rebound from Angel Di Maria’s goal attempt, that goal went through Atletico fan’s hearts like a sharp knife. Soon substitute Marcelo made it 3-1, however an observation that I made is that Ronaldo did not celebrate any of those goals with his teammates.

He then tricked his way into the penalty area, and won a penalty which he converted to make it 4-1 to Los Blancos. The manner in which he celebrated was not only disrespectful, it also showed his arrogance and how his ego comes before the team. Honestly his goal was not a game defining one, it was just a cherry on top which deserved a mini celebration.

I love Cristiano however a true role model should show team spirit and put his ego behind the team in the pecking order.

Overall it was a nice treatment of football, until Brazil 2014 comes calling.

Kaizer Chiefs Stroll Past Black Africa

Brace hero Kingston Nkatha

Black Africa 0

By Daniel Chokoe

A brace by Kingston Nkhatha helped Kaizer Chiefs to a
comfortable 3-0 win over Black Africa in the first leg of the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday evening.

Mandla Masango broke the deadlock through a superb volley but it was Kingston Nkatha who had a game of his life and in turn silencing the boo boys after he scooped a brace. Fans are starting to warm up to the Zimbabwean after a string of good performance, overall Amakhosi continue to be a bunch of winners.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter made no fewer than five changes to the side that beat SuperSport United 1-0 in midweek.

Baxter chose to rest some of his first-team regulars, with the likes of Bernard Parker, Siphiwe Tshabalala,Willard Katsande and Reneilwe Letsholonyane included
on the bench.

The second leg will be played at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek on 15 February.

Line Ups:
Kaizer Chiefs: Khune; Moleko, Mathoho, Mashamaite, Gaxa, Maluleka, Nkosi, Masango(Tshabalala 73), Lebese (Rusike 46), Musona (Parker 68), Nkhatha

Black Africa: Subeb; Angula, Martin (Adams 84), Gebhardt, Katire, Mundjanima, Hoaseb, Bantam, Blom (Van Wyk 58) , Stephanus, Katjiteo (Eugene 77)

kaizer Chiefs- A Bunch Of Winners

who can stop the kaizer train packed with a bunch of winners?

who can stop the kaizer train packed with a bunch of winners?

By Daniel Chokoe

When bafana Bafana bowed out of the CHAN tournament which they hosted, Sports minister came out with harsh words by labelling them “bunch of losers”, in the same breathe I came up with the best fitting team for Kaizer Chiefs “a bunch of winners”

Kaizer Chiefs defeated Supersport Utd 1-0 lastnight to extend their winning streak to 9 games. The log leaders won the game through a Bernard Parker freekick and maintained the 11 points margin at the top.

A nine game winning streak is something special especially if it happens in the ever competitive PSL where any team can beat another, Chiefs have been up against top teams however they still got maximum points from those games.

The Amakhosi outfit that is lead by Stuart Baxter might just turn out to be the best Chiefs team ever, they will be participating in the CAF champions league and judging by the way they are playing they can definetly be considered as one of the favourites.

I believe we are really blessed to live in the same era where we are witnessing the best Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in history respectively.

Ofcourse some people will claim that the current Pirates team is not the best as they have not won the champions league, although that is correct they won treble trophies in two consecutive seasons and went close to winning the champions league as they lost out in the final to Al Ahly.

Can anyone stop Baxter’s high flying train?

Juan Mata Swaps Blue With Red As Chelsea Accept £37 Million Bid

New teamates- Mata and Rooney

New teamates- Mata and Rooney

By Daniel Chokoe

Chelsea have accepted a £37million bid for Juan Mata and immediately released the Spanish
international to join Manchester United to complete the most dramatic deal of the transfer
window.

Mata will undergo a medical on Thursday at United before completing the move that will see him more than double his £70,000-a-week Chelsea salary at
Old Trafford.

Mata’s signing will add some quality into the toothless Man Utd side that bowed out of the League cup last night courtesy of a penalty shootout defeat by Sunderland.

The Spanish international is by far David Moyes’ biggest transfer and will in a way make things simple for Chelsea as United will face all other top 4 teams in the league except Chelsea, so it may have been a masterstroke by The Special One to ensure that they can claim the Premier league title.

Only time will tell though!

Bafana Bafana- The untalented cheese boy

By Daniel Chokoe

I remember growing up we played a lot of football, having a proper ball to play with was a priviledge. The ball would usually be owned by one of the boys from the rich families, I was also the unfortunate one because although I was brought up in a middle class family they used to buy me football merchandise because I was talented.

“Cheese boy”,a name used to refer to a boy from a rich family would have the football merchandise but no talent whatsoever; so whenever we needed to play a game we would start by playing in the first game then substitute him in the games that follow. We made an exception to include him in our game because we needed his merchandise to play, we let him play the first game to remind him how untalented he is after the poor performers he would then sit and watch the rest of the games as talented players showcase their skills.

Sadly, the exact thing is happening to Bafana Bafana, because they have the best facilities in the continent they get to host tournaments and automatically qualify to play as hosts. When the tournaments are reaching the climax stages the bow out, and watch other nations as they claim glory on their own turf. After every tournament they go back to the drawing board, I am starting to ask myself just how many drawing boards have been used by our national team. Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula has labelled them “useless individuals” as they were inhilated by a weak and inexperienced Nigerian side to be knocked out of the CHAN tournament. I think the question we should start asking ourself as a nation is : Do we have enough talent to compete with other nations or are we just cheese boys with no talent?

Kaizer Chiefs have signed midfielder George Maluleka on a three-and-a-half-year contract from SuperSport United.

The midfield maestro is expected to help chiefs retain their championship and provide some much needed steel in the middle of the field during their participation in the champions league.

Amakhosi is reported to be in talks with Sundowns on the availability of Edward Manqele, they will look to capture his signature to fill the void that will be left by the contract rebel Lehlogonolo Majoro who is thought to be on his way to Supersport United.

Which Sagweni Brother Shot Their Uncle?

Siyabonga and Thamsanqa Sangweni

By Daniel Chokoe

The Sagweni brothers are known for their football talent, all three of them play for clubs in the elite PSL. Siyabonga 31 (Orlando Pirates), Thamsanqa 24 (Mamelodi Sundowns), Mandla 26 (Amazulu goalkeeper).

It is not their talents that made me write this article, one of the Sagweni brothers is reported to have shot their uncle with a gun.

Orlando Pirates Administrator Floyd Mbele was quick to take their player out of the equation.

He announced that Siyabonga was not the one who pulled the trigger, however one of the other brothers did shoot at Sagweni Senior.

“It was not Siyabonga, it was one of his siblings” Mbele said.
He declined to give any further details on the matter. It was earlier reported that one of the brothers shot their father however it is infact their uncle who was shot.

It is still unclear on which brother shot their uncle and the motive behind the shooting. We are still not informed on whether their father is still alive or not, Diskiexpress will keep you informed with the latest on this story.

Ajax Cape Town can confirm that Lebogang Manyama will be a Supersport United player in 2014.
Manyama played his last game for Ajax Cape Town against Platinum Stars on Saturday evening. Lebogang scored 15 goals in 71 starts for Ajax Cape Town. He signed for the Urban Warriors from Alexandra United in 2010.

Ari Efstathiou said, “Ajax Cape Town and Supersport United have agreed terms on the
transfer and Manyama has accepted personal terms offered by United and will join them from January 2014.

Ajax Cape Town has paved the way for Manyama to have a very succesful future and would like to thank him for his contribution to Ajax Cape Town during his three and a half years with the club.”

It was reported early in the month that Ajax had agreed a bid from Chiefs however the player could not agree personal terms with the current PSL log leaders and defending champions. His Manager Maimane Phiri shut the door on any possible local move happening citing that Manyama will hold on for an overseas move which will happen at end of the 2013/14 season.

I just need clarity on something, is Supersport now a European team or does Phiri have anything against Chiefs? for all you know the move would have been a great stepping stone for his career afterall Chiefs will be participating in the champions league.

Ajax Accepts Chiefs Bid For Manyama

The talented Manyama is expected to don the famous Amakhosi Jersey by January 2014

By Daniel Chokoe

Ajax Cape Town have agreed terms with Kaizer Chiefs for the services of Lebogang Manyama.
Manyama’s move to the Chiefs in January is subject to the player agreeing personal terms with the club.

In a press release, Ajax admit that the “lucrative offer” they made to Manyama was not enough to entice him to stay, but add that they wish him all the best at Amakhosi.

“We have agreed and accepted the offer made by Kaizer Chiefs for Manyama’s services,” club boss Ari Efstathiou says.
“As new management, we indicated at the start of the season that we would like to retain our players so as to build a strong and competitive team.

“We offered Lebo a new lucrative contract, however, the player indicated that he would like to make a move and start a new adventure in his life.
“With Lebo’s contract coming to an end in June 2014, we had no alternative but to consider all our options.
“Kaizer Chiefs was first off the block, tabling an offer that was fair and reasonable.
“We are absolutely sure that Lebo will play his heart out in the remaining two home games against Bloemfontein Celtic and Platinum Stars next week and will leave the club that launched his career with a flurry of goals.
“We appreciate Lebo’s contribution to the success of Ajax Cape Town during his time at Ikamva and we wish him well for his future.”

Chiefs have signed one of SA’s brightest talents and he will play a huge role in helping Amakhosi regain their title, Amakhosi are expected to sign a few more players since they will be participating in the CAF Champions league which starts early next year. They will need to add depth to their thin squad.

Which other player do you think Chiefs need to sign?

Puma pulled off their partnership with Bafana Bafana leaving a void for the national team to fill

By Daniel Chokoe

Adult website Ashley Madison has offered national soccer team Bafana Bafana a sponsorship deal of nearly R10 million, The Star reported on Tuesday.
The site’s chief executive and founder Noel Biderman said his website, whose slogan is “life is short, have an affair”, could fill the sponsorship gap left after Puma pulled its support for the SA Football Association (Safa).
Biderman reportedly wrote a letter to Safa boss Danny Jordaan.
“Sportsmen are famous for their cheating ways and we feel linking our dating site with this impressive club’s performance historically and tying in to its future will create a powerful partnership,” he reportedly said in the letter.

Safa spokesman Dominic Chimhavi dismissed the offer as a marketing ploy.
“We haven’t received a single letter,” he told the newspaper.
“Anyway, the Bafana Bafana brand is a national asset and we wouldn’t want it to be associated with something that will make it a laughing stock.”

Personally I don’t think SAFA should consider such an offer, Bafana Bafana is the pride of the nation followed by fans of all age groups and should not be associated with such a brand.

Arsenal Outclass Liverpool to move five points clear

By Daniel Chokoe

The stage was set for a top of the table clash on Saturday with both teams hoping to get the 3 points, but it was the home side that left their visitors walking alone with an impressive 2-0 win. The gunners bossed the game from the first whistle winning most of the individual battles in the midfield.

They wasted no chance as Santi Carzola deservedly put the home side ahead in the 18th minute. The game was even as the Spaniard fired his side ahead, lashing the ball home after his bullet header had come back off the post. Liverpool threatened the Gunners defence as Daniel Sturridge notably kept probing the defence with his skillful runs however Arsenal remained resilient until the final whistle.

Ramsey then secured all three points on the hour mark when he cracked in a sublime 25-yard half-volley for his 10th goal of an impressive campaign as Arsene Wenger’s side renewed
belief ahead of this week’s Euro trip to Dortmund and Premier League game at Manchester United.

The result meant the Gunners top the log with a 5 points margin.

“Don’t go inventing things about the relationship between myself and the club.”

This is not the first time a manager criticizes the Italian media, Jose Mourinho was very vocal about how unimpressed he was with the media in Italian football.

Platini Calls For A World Cup Expansion

By Daniel Chokoe

Uefa president Michel Platini has called for the World Cup to be expanded from 32 to 40 teams, saying it would ensure better representation for non-European confederations.

Fifa counterpart Sepp Blatter recently spoke about Africa and Asia’s under-representation at the showpiece.
Blatter backs more African slots for World Cup But rather than reduce Europe’s finals quota of 13 teams, Platini feels expansion is the way to go.
“It’s good for everybody,” Platini told The Times. “I totally agree with Mr Blatter that we need more African and Asian (countries). But instead of taking away some European, we have to go to 40 teams in the World Cup.
“We can add two African, two Asiatic, two American and one from Europe. I support this idea totally.”
He continued: “Football is changing and now we have 209 associations. There are more countries so why reduce? Forty is not so bad.
“You have three days more of competition and you make more people happy.”

It would be a great idea but it favours Europe more, the whole concept of having more Europe nations is the fact that they provide better quality and competition however I think that is not really true. South Africa beat France 2-1 in the last world cup, bring on Russia,Portugal, Poland or even England they can still be defeated by an African or Asian nation.

Football has evolved worldwide the fact that Europe has more than double the advantage as oppossed to other federation bears proof to the list of achievers of the cup. It is most likely for a European team to win the World cup more than any other confederation, I suggest they reduce 13 nations to 9; and increase Africa, Asia, North and South America confederation with an additional one more spot respectively in the world cup. That way we do not change the format of the tournament but maintain a slightly better balancer between all continents.

Mata and Jose in training

Mata and Jose in training

Jose Mourinho’s fringe players.
The People says question marks remain over Juan Mata’s future while Demba Ba, Gary Cahill, Kevin De Bruyne, Cesar Azpilicueta, John Obi Mikel and Ryan Bertrand.

Napoli and Atletico Madrid are monitoring Mata’s situation, Arsenal tried to sign Ba on loan and there is interest from Germany in De Bruyne.
A Stamford Bridge source said: “A lot of the lads are in the same boat and are unsure over their places.

“It doesn’t look like Jose has settled on his best team and he is changing things around a lot.”

I can understand the reasons for selling certain players, but it does not seem logical to sell the club’s two-time season player of the year. Juan Mata has been nothing but excellent for the London based club and to be fair he was never given enough chance to prove himself. It seems Jose simply doesn’t like Juan Mata, but it would be painful to Blues fans if he leaves for any of their League rivals.

SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble released a statement to the Safa national executive committee members on Sunday, the Safa CEO said he had to institute disciplinary action against Mashaba after “the unpleasant events” that unfolded after the game.

“Following some unpleasant events after the match of the men’s senior national team (Bafana Bafana) at Peter Mokaba Stadium yesterday, I had to meet with head coach, Ephraim Mashaba today (Sunday) to commence disciplinary steps against him,” Mumble said in the statement.

“As a result of yesterday’s events, I was forced to place the head coach on suspension with immediate effect pending a full disciplinary hearing.

“As has been policy in matters involving staff discipline, we will not respond to media enquiries except for issuing a brief statement to alert the public to the absence of the head coach from the bench for Tuesday’s friendly match against the Mozambican men’s senior national team.
